Pittsburgh, PA — Carlow University ranked strongly in the U.S. News and World Report list of top performers on social mobility for 2024. Moving up 16 places since 2024, Carlow now ranks #23 in the category, making it the highest-ranking institution in the Pittsburgh region.
Carlow is a private, co-educational, Catholic university located at the hub of Pittsburgh’s most cutting-edge industries. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1929, Carlow’s curricula and partnerships reflect its strong commitment to social justice, forward-thinking leadership, and impactful service to the community.
For Angela, the lessons she learned at Carlow—about compassion, community, and self-worth—are at the heart of everything she does. “Carlow has definitely been in my thought process through everything that I’ve accomplished,” she says. “I remember when you would drive on the parkway, and they had those billboards that said, ‘At Carlow You Matter.’ I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind because no matter what we go through, what we deal with, your life really does matter.”
Established in 2018, the President’s Cup is presented by the USCAA to the athletic department that scores the highest in academic performance. It was created to honor member institutions whose student-athletes excel in the classroom and to highlight the efforts of an athletic program to put academics first in its mission of providing opportunities for young people.
The Celtics secured the President’s Cup twice in the past three years (and earned second place in 2022-23), which is a testament to our student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom, and our department’s commitment to our students’ futures.
The hybrid format provided Marion with a balance between online flexibility and valuable in-person interactions. “It’s a lot of hours and hard work, but those connections make it manageable,” she adds. In addition to the hybrid format, Marion was drawn to Carlow’s reputation for providing clinical placement support, which is essential for nursing students. “Dr. Bernadette Sherman helps each and every one of us make sure that we have clinicals. Carlow is one of the few programs that ensures we have fulfilling clinical hours, so we feel prepared when we graduate.”
For Marion, Carlow’s hybrid nursing program has provided the perfect blend of academic rigor, support, and flexibility—giving her the confidence to step into her future as a nurse practitioner, ready to make a difference.
Ms. Savko became one of over 2,000 college students studying education who were informed they would receive the financial incentive as part of the state’s new student teacher stipend program. The initiative gives a stipend of $10,000 to student teachers meeting program requirements. An additional $5,000 is available to those working in high-need areas.
“We really see a benefit in providing stipends for students. … We hear from our students that that’s one of the deterrents to even really considering going through a teacher certification program is the inability for them to leave full-time employment for a semester,” Keely Baronak, chair of Carlow University’s Department of Education and Liberal Studies, said.
PITTSBURGH — Carlow University celebrated a significant milestone last Friday night as it hosted the inaugural pinning ceremony for its first cohort of Practical Nursing (PN) students.
