Carlow University hosts The Human Library on Wednesday, March 21, to open conversations and break down prejudice and stereotypes.

Carlow University Sponsors the Human Library on Wednesday, March 21
Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Human Library, an innovative concept designed to create conversations that challenge prejudices and stereotypes, will come to Carlow University on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. in Grace Library, located in the University Commons on Carlow’s campus.
“Our living books are drawn from the surrounding community,” said Michael B. Jones, PhD, Executive Director of the Library and Learning Commons at Carlow. “We intentionally scheduled the event for the month of March to connect it to Women’s History Month. Our Human Library catalog contains only women, each of whom represent diversity and experience from across a broad spectrum of our community.”
The “living books” will include women of color, immigrant women, women who have served in the Peace Corps in Africa, women who have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, and/or sexual assault, a transgender woman, and a biracial single mother raising a biracial child, to name just a few.
“Patrons to the Human Library can check out a living book for a private 20-minute conversation,” said Jones. “They can check out as many books as they want. It will start by browsing a catalog, which will list all of the books, and they then can request a book from a librarian.”
The Human Library is a project of The Human Library Foundation with its home base in the Netherlands. Human Library events are currently held in colleges and universities on five continents.
Carlow’s participation in The Human Library is made possible through funding from the Atkins Endowed Center for Ethics, the Social Justice Institutes, McAuley Ministries, and the Grace Ann Geibel Institute for Justice and Social Responsibility.
