Carlow University President Dr. Mary Hines was named the 2013 Woman of the Year at the fourth annual Pittsburgh Service Summit, sponsored by the non-profit organization, Get Involved!, Inc.
The Summit was held at Carlow University on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, in the St. Agnes Center of Carlow University and brought nearly 250 students and Pittsburgh young professionals to campus.
Dr. Hines, who is retiring as president of Carlow at the end of July, was named the 2013 Woman of the Year. Since becoming Carlow’s president in 2005, Dr. Hines has been involved on the boards of many community and civic organizations.
One current Carlow student and two recent alumni were also honored at the Summit. Jessica Brubach was named the 2013 Female Emerging Leader.
Carlow graduates, Emily Kolek and LaTrenda Leonard were named to the 2013 Western Pennsylvania Rising Stars, a group of young professionals, ages 21 through 30, who are active in charitable service.
Kolek, a 2010 graduate, serves on the Young Professional Board of Get Involved! She also served as the TOMS campus leader in her time at Carlow.
Leonard earned her MBA from Carlow and is the public relations and communications director for the National Black MBA Association.
The Summit also featured four keynote speakers:
- Ian Rosenberger, a CBS Survivor contestant and founder of an international humanitarian relief organization;
- Saleem Ghubril, the executive director for the Pittsburgh Promise
- Kevin Kearns, PhD, an award-winning University of Pittsburgh professor and director for an institute on responsible leadership; and
- Sally Wiggin, a well-known Pittsburgh television journalist with WTAE.
