Vandalized Statue Will Receive New Hands and a Cleaning
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University’s statue of Jesus, which recently had its hands broken off in an act of vandalism, will receive new hands and a cleaning thanks to the Pittsburgh masonry restoration company, Mariani and Richards.
Andrea Mariani Freeborough, one of the owners of the company, made the offer to repair the statue at no cost to Carlow in memory of her mother, Josephine Corrado, who graduated from Carlow (then known as Mount Mercy College), in 1938. Josephine received her bachelor’s of arts in sociology and English, and worked as a social worker before founding Mariani and Richards with her husband, Ed Mariani, in 1950.
“She would be so pleased to know we are helping restore this important symbolic piece of Carlow’s history,” said Mariani Freeborough.
The statue stands overlooking Fifth Avenue near Carlow’s St. Agnes Center (the former St. Agnes Catholic Church), near the intersection with Robinson Street in the West Oakland neighborhood. The statue was vandalized sometime between the end of the academic year in May and when the vandalism was noticed in July. Surveillance video of the area did not provide any clues to who might have damaged the statue.
“While we are upset that the statue was damaged, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the offer to restore it by Mariani and Richards,” said a university spokesperson. “Everyone in the Carlow community thanks Mariani and Richards for undertaking this work.”
