Two Events on March 28, and a Two-Day Training on April 6 and 7
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Preventing gun violence will be the theme of upcoming events sponsored by Carlow University’s Social Justice Institutes on Wednesday, March 28, and Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7 in the Kresge Center, located on the fifth floor of the University Commons, on the Carlow campus.
“In 2016, the American Medical Association declared that gun violence is a public health crisis, and said that more research is needed to understand the consequences of gun violence,” said Jessica Ruffin, director of the Social Justice Institutes at Carlow. “We along with many of our community partners believe gun violence meets that criteria. Suicides and homicides, and their impact on families, employers, and communities, are two leading consequences of gun violence on which the Institutes can bring research and scholarship with the goal of reducing the number of deaths and injuries from guns.”

Wednesday, March 28 — The Role of Social Media in Gun Violence Prevention
This takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 pm in the Kresge Center.
As a part of the Educate for Justice Initiative, Carlow’s Social Justice Institutes, in collaboration with Allegheny County’s Office of Violence Prevention, is hosting this summit, which will bring together community organizers, local leaders, and nonprofit professionals to discuss effective strategies for violence interruption, and the relationship between social media and community violence.
Wednesday, March 28 — An Evening with Allegheny County Health Department’s Office of Violence Prevention: Presentation and Community Feedback Session. This takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. also in the Kresge Center.
Allegheny County’s Office of Violence Prevention will present their recent work, research, and evaluation to community members, who will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.
Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 — The Women of Spirit® Training Institute Friday’s event is 5 to 7:30 and Saturday is 8:30 a.m. To 4:30 p.m. Both days are in the Kresge Center.
The Women of Spirit® Training Institute will provide women-centered leadership and advocacy training, focused around the socially relevant issue of gun violence prevention. Through the Training Institute, women will gain the skills necessary to effectively address the issue of gun violence, and create change in their communities. Friday’s event is the reception dinner, and Saturday is the day-long training session.
