Leaders from Government, Business, and Healthcare Sectors
Pittsburgh, Pa. –Carlow University welcomed four new members to its Board of Trustees for 2019-2020. Western Pennsylvania residents Michele Atkins and Cynthia Maleski, JD, are joined on the board by Sister Mary Fanning, RSM, from Baltimore, MD, and Patricia G. Donohoe, from Tampa, FL.
“Our new trustees carry a wealth of experience in diverse areas,” said Carlow President Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD. “We are very fortunate to have them join our board and I know they will strengthen the Carlow community with their talents, energy, and their dedication to the well-being of our university.”
Joining the Carlow University Board of Trustees are:
Michele R. Atkins. ‘82
Michele R. Atkins is a Carlow alumna from the class of 1982. She previously served as Carlow University Board Chair from 2013-2016, and is a Trustee Emerita. The university has honored her as a Carlow Laureate, the highest honor awarded to alumni, as a Woman of Spirit® in 2001, and as the initial recipient, along with her husband Dr. Patrick Atkins, of the David and Barbara Capozzi Kirr ’60 Leadership in Philanthropy Award for their outstanding commitment of time and treasure to Carlow. For more than 30 years, Atkins has devoted herself to initiatives that serve the most vulnerable members of society, protect the sacredness of all creation, and advocate for the arts and education. Most recently, to recognize the importance of ethical behavior throughout all society, Michele and Pat endowed the Atkins Center for Ethics at Carlow University.
Patricia G. Donohoe, RN, ‘75
Patricia G. Donohoe is a 1975 Carlow nursing graduate and 2012 Carlow Laureate. She began her career in California as a critical care nurse. After 8 years, she left her position to start Medical Staffing Network, a medical staffing company based on the west coast, which she and her business partners grew into the second largest medical staffing firm in the United States. After selling Medical Staffing Network she launched Accountable Healthcare Staffing, Inc., another medical staffing firm, which became successful as well. She retired from Accountable Healthcare Staffing, Inc., in 2017. Currently, she does consulting for her former company and for the healthcare industry at large and gives expert witness testimony for anti-trust cases in the healthcare industry.
Sr. Mary Fanning, RSM, PhD
Sister Mary Fanning is a graduate of Mount Saint Agnes College in Baltimore, MD, where she earned a BA in Chemistry. In 1979 she completed an MBA with concentration in Finance at Loyola University, Maryland, followed by a Health Systems Management Certificate from Harvard University School of Public Health in 1986, and a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2006. She is a retired faculty member of Notre Dame of Maryland University, Department of Business and Economics, was a consultant to nonprofit organizations addressing board effectiveness, operations management and financial management. She served as President and CEO of Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin Kentucky, and Assistant Administrator for Mercy Medical Center Baltimore, Maryland. She is a Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, member of the Catholic Health Association, and advanced member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. She currently serves as a member on the boards of Trinity Health Systems, Livonia, MI, Mercy Health Services Baltimore, MD and The Catholic Hospital Inc., in Georgetown, Guyana.
Cynthia Maleski, JD
Cynthia Maleski earned a BA in Education from University of Pittsburgh in 1973, Phi Beta Kappa Summa Cum Laude, followed by a law degree from Duquesne University, 1976. She is national President of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in Cleveland, OH. She is a nationally known expert in insurance law and served as the first in‑house counsel at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh for 16 years. She served as state insurance commissioner under Gov. Robert Casey from 1993 to 1995, and served on the Citizen Advisory Board for First National Trust from 2006‑2010. Maleski was appointed to the law committee of the National Fraternal Congress of America (2006).
