United States Academic Decathlon Scheduled for Today at Convention Center
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University President Kathy Humphrey, PhD, will emcee the Super Quiz Relay event at the United States Academic Decathlon today, Friday, April 26, at 2 p.m. in the David Lawrence Convention Center.
The United States Academic Decathlon is the nation’s largest scholastic competition in which teams throughout the United States compete in ten events: Art, Music, Literature, Science, Social Science, Mathematics, Economics, Essay, Speech, and Interview. Over 700 students from all over the country, accompanied by their teachers and parents, will participate in the competition to win bronze, silver, and gold medals and scholarships.
The Super Quiz Relay is set to take place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 26. In her role as emcee, Dr. Humphrey will present 54 multiple-choice questions displayed on screen, with groups of three students from each school responding to 18 questions. The students will have 10 seconds to answer each question, with 20 seconds allocated for math, utilizing an automated response system (clickers). The competition is divided into three categories based on the students’ GPA: Varsity, Scholastic, and Honors.
Butler County’s Seneca Valley High School has a championship team participating in the Academic Decathlon. The team’s coach is Seneca Valley teacher David Reichard.
