Carlow Signs on with U.S. Department of Defense as a Preferred Provider for Education

“Military Friendly” Designation Given to only Top 15 Percent of Colleges, Universities, and Trade Schools

Pittsburgh, Pa. –Carlow University has been named a “Military Friendly®” school by VictoryMedia, a veteran-owned business and the publisher of G.I. Jobs and the Guide to Military Friendly Schools, and – additionally – has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States Department of Defense to be a preferred provider for education, which will allow military students to access additional funds for their education.

“Ensuring that military dependents get an excellent education is a top priority at CarlowUniversity. We recognize that education is a stabilizing influence in the lives of military families,” said Carlow’s president, Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD.  “Carlow University will help veterans and their dependents use their education benefits to their fullest extent and potential.”

Victory Media’s Military Friendly® Schools designation, a program in its sixth year, is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.

“We are here to help veterans navigate and succeed with academic resources and transition services in the spirit of service and dedication that is Carlow’s legacy,” said Dr. Mellon.  “We’ll be here for military personnel and their families from their first contact with the university all the way until graduation.”

The methodology used for making the Military Friendly®Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape to one that is much more transparent, providing service members with clear, date-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities. The survey captures more than50 leading practices in supporting military students, and is provided free of charge to the more than 8,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 G.I. Bill funding. The 2015 Military Friendly® Schools results were independently verified by Ernst& Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology developed by VictoryMedia with input by its independent Academic Advisory Board comprised of educators from schools across the country.

Carlow is also a participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, which provides matching funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs to supplement the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Carlow’s Military Friendly® designation is the latest of several national honors given to the university. In October, Carlow was notified of its inclusion in the top 100 of Educate to Career’s (ETC) college ranking index, which highlights schools that enhance their students earnings and employability, and the WashingtonMonthly’s “Best Bang for the Buck” top 100 list of colleges and universities that do the best job of helping students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.  Carlow was ranked69th on ETC’s list (one of only seven schools from Pennsylvania to be ranked and the only regional school in the top 100) and earned an overall95th ranking (and 17th among the private schools) on Washington Monthly’s listing.
