Artist Has Earned Two NEA Grants, Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowships
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Joyce Kozloff, an internationally known New York artist who often incorporates patterns and cartography in her artwork, will be at Carlow University on Monday, November 13, 2017 for a public lecture at 5 p.m. in room 107 of the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, located at the corner of Fifth and Craft avenues.
“Joyce Kozloff is not only a great artist. She has also spent her life fighting for social justice causes,” said Sarah Jacobs, assistant professor of art at Carlow University. “She has been an advocate for the rights of women and minorities in the art world. Her public lecture at Carlow is a rare opportunity to hear from an artist who has an international following and a strong moral and political voice.”
A life-long peace advocate, Kozloff is an original member of the Pattern and Decoration Movement and the Feminist Art Movement of the 1970s. She is a founding member of the Heresies Collective (1977-1993), and an original member of We Make America, an organization that makes visual statements in support of social justice causes. Her series, Girlhood, is currently featured in a solo exhibition at DC Moore Gallery in New York City.
She has had or still has her public art displayed at the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, the Cultural Center in Kurayoshi, Japan, National Airport in Washington, DC, San Francisco Airport, as well as installations in Buffalo, Wilmington, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York.
Kozloff earned her MFA in art from Columbia University, and her bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon). She has received two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grants, a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rome Prize, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Caucus for Art, and has been elected into the National Academy of Design.
