Pittsburgh, Pa. –Carlow University and the Elmhurst Group, the Pittsburgh-based real estate developer, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop university-owned property along Fifth Avenue in Oakland.

By signing the MOU, Carlow University President Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD, and Elmhurst Group President and CEO William E. Hunt have committed to creating a partnership to develop the property located west of the university’s driveway on Fifth Avenue and opposite the intersection between Fifth and Craft Avenues.  The university will share space in the future building, which is projected to be approximately 225,000 square feet.

“Development of this property presents a transformational opportunity to realize a larger vision for the university property on Fifth Avenue,” said Dr. Mellon.  “The property is located within the Innovation District in Oakland, and is an excellent location for a company in healthcare, technology, or innovation interested in partnering with a university.” The property enjoys a unique position at the gateway between Oakland and the downtown business district.

Included in Carlow’s Institutional Master Plan, the project will include facilities for health sciences, including lab space, as well as dining services and green space estimated to total 100,000 square feet, while an equal or potentially greater amount of space would be available for a partner in the joint development.

“Elmhurst has a strong history of creating landmark properties with great appeal to many different kinds of users,” said Hunt. “This is a prime location with great potential for industry, research, and healthcare that will clearly enhance this growing section of Oakland.  We look forward to partnering with Carlow on this important project.”

Dr. Mellon said that the university will be actively engaging with community leaders in anticipation of moving forward with this project.  “We believe the development will be transformative in a very positive way to the community.”
