Carlow University has partnered with UPMC to offer the regions only University-level Surgical Technology Program of it’s kind with the clinical expertise of one of the nation’s top ranked academic medical centers.

In less than two years, graduates of the associate of science degree in surgical technology program will be prepared to have unparalleled training and experience to become a valued member of the surgical care team.

The Surgical Technology Program Outcomes reflect: The Sisters of Mercy Core Values (Carlow University Mission Statement, 2009), and the Association of Surgical Technologist Foundational Principles (1997).

The Surgical Technology Program prepares Carlow ST Graduates to:

  • Provide care in a responsible, accountable manner within ethical-legal dimensions. 
  • Utilize appropriate medical terminology.
  • Identify and assume appropriate responsibility for patient care.
  • Relate principles of asepsis in the surgical setting. 
  • Utilize principles of surgical technology to meet the needs of the surgical patient in the operating room and ambulatory surgical unit.
  • Organize the sterile surgical field to provide safe and efficient surgical care to the patient. 
  • Preforms with knowledge, skills, and affective behaviors of a competent entry-level Surgical Technologist. 
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of the concepts of pharmacology and sciences.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication methods necessary for the profession.
  • In addition to the expertise of your clinical instructors, you will train alongside UPMC surgeons, nurses and surgical technologists. 
  • Attend Surgical Technology clinical courses at the UPMC Energy Innovation Center and experience a 10:1 student to educator ratio.
  • Learn over 30 different surgical procedures from beginning to end.
  • Complete 120 surgical cases in 13 surgical specialty areas at various UPMC facilities.

Carlow Surgical Technology graduates are trained  to be the best in technical knowledge and competencies, and communication, teamwork, empathy, and compassion. As Carlow graduates they are prepared to create a more just and merciful world. Graduates of this program are well-prepared for positions  as Surgical Technologists within hospital or community-based settings. 


To apply for the Surgical Technology Program, you will need to:

  • Submit an online application for admission.
  • Request the official transcripts from all current and previous institutions, that you have attended, are sent directly to the Carlow University Office of Admissions.
  • First-time, first-year undergraduate student:
    • GPA only: minimum cumulative high school GPA 2.0
    • Earned minimum cumulative science GPA of 2.5. Science courses include (Anatomy and Physiology I & II and Microbiology)
  • Transfer student, minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.0.
  • Students who plan to major in surgical technology will be assigned the temporary major of pre-surgical technology until they are officially admitted into the surgical technology program after successful completion* of the second semester at Carlow.
