University transitioning to self-screening mode after Thanksgiving break

University Communications to Students

Distributed: October 29, 2020

Dear Students,

Cases of COVID-19 infections continue to rise with Allegheny County recording one of the highest single day totals yesterday. While also seeing a few additional cases on campus, your commitment to the common good (wearing face masks, social distancing, washing your hands, and cleaning common surfaces before and after use) has kept our numbers manageable.

New This Week:

Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 Registration Begins

Registration for Spring and Summer 2021 opens Monday, November 2. Please see the Registrar’s intranet page for specific dates, helpful videos, and instructions.

The Summer 2021 course schedule is now posted in WebAdvisor. Note that all classes offered for summer are under the 2021SU – Summer 2021 term. This includes all accelerated, day, and graduate level classes.

Move to Self-Screening After Thanksgiving Break

Continuing with the COVID-19 health management strategy, we will shift to self-screening for all students who are living on-campus or coming to campus for in-person instruction. Many classes will shift to finishing the semester remotely. Please clarify with each instructor so you will know what to expect.

Center for Academic Achievement Here to Help!

The CAA offers tutoring and coaching both live online and with in-person by appointment. Students can make an appointment with a tutor or academic coach through the scheduling system’s synchronous web feature (www.Carlow.mywconline.com), work with a writing tutor through email (caa@carlow.edu), or contact us by phone at 412.578.6146. Finish the semester with a strong command of course material.

Daylight Savings Time

Another reminder that daylight saving time begins at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. Clocks turn back 1 hour, offering additional sleep that evening. Enjoy the much-needed rest.

Important Resources:

Health and Counseling Services Available

All counseling services will be offered via telehealth; the Counseling Center is closed to in-person services. To schedule an appointment, students can email healthandcounselingservices@live.carlow.edu with their full name and contact information to request a phone call to schedule, or can call 412-578-6474 (leave a message if no one is available to take their call).

Medical and mental health emergencies should be directed to Campus Police at 412-578-6007 if on-campus, 911 if off-campus, or resolve crisis services (Allegheny County) 1-888-796-8226.

Disabilities Services Office (DSO)

It is still possible to request accommodations through the DSO. Please complete a Confidential Request for Accommodation form. A meeting with the DSO will help determine accommodations for which you may be qualified. Accommodations are not retroactive but can be placed for the remainder of the semester.

Reminders:

Office Hours and Contacts

Offices remain open to assist those on campus or in person. You can find details here. Also please note that staff are available to meet with you face-to-face by request. So please let us know how we can best be of service.

Treat Symptoms with Caution

It is important that if you are having any symptoms within the COVID-19 scope to respond as if they are COVID-19 related until you have determined otherwise through a physician. As we move into the cold and flu season, we will begin to experience normal illnesses as in years past. Please exercise an abundance of caution and hold in place at the onset of any symptoms, for both you and the community.

As the semester nears the end, please submit a report and let the Care team know about your needs, questions, or concerns as they arise. We are committed to being in contact with you and to helping.

Take care, be well, and stay safe,

Timothy P. Phillips, Ph.D.
Vice President of Student Affairs & Dean of Students
