The Office for Mercy Service provides the Carlow University community with a collaborative base for community outreach, volunteer programs and year-round service opportunities. Service and volunteer opportunities are continuously updated and communicated to the Carlow community, raising awareness of our community’s challenges and needs, and showing our students the many ways they can help.

Through creating connections and fostering relationships between our community partners and student volunteers, nonprofit organizations’ service capacity to the community is increased, volunteers are personally transformed through understanding and reflecting on social and moral challenges, and professional connections and networks are made and nourished.

Key Mercy service programs include:

Carlow University is proud to host a chapter of Catholic Relief Services Student Ambassadors who help engage the campus community to act on global emergencies and injustices.

CRS Student Ambassadors:

  • Learn about the root causes of global poverty and injustice
  • Develop leadership skills and use them to take action
  • Organize and educate others through such avenues as CRS Ethical Trade sales, advocacy, and engaging with local and state officials
  • Participate in regional and national student trainings and take part in a national network of ambassadors that remains connected to CRS through college and beyond

Each year, hundreds of Carlow University students engage with communities around Pittsburgh. We are able to accomplish such outstanding student participation in community engagement because of the support and efforts of our community partners. If you are a student or faculty member at Carlow and wish to connect with one of our community partners, or if you represent a nonprofit organization and wish to be a community partner, Kate O’Brien (email: kaobrien@carlow.edu).
