Carlow’s Perioperative Internship: Beginning a Journey Through Surgical Nursing

Nursing students seeking to dive headfirst into the thrilling, high-pressure world of operating rooms need to consider Carlow University’s Perioperative Internship program, a two-credit elective course that unfolds over a span of six weeks during the summer, that will offer immersive learning experiences, top-notch mentorship, and impactful encounters with the world of nursing.

At the heart of this program is the concept of immersive learning. Nursing students have the incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in pre-operative, operating suites, and post-anesthesia recovery care areas.

The Perioperative Internship takes a holistic approach to learning. It doesn’t just stop at offering practical experiences; it ensures students gain a well-rounded understanding of perioperative nursing, encompassing all phases of patient care. While students meet on campus once a week for education on the basic principles of perioperative nursing, the true magic happens during clinical hours at UPMC Presbyterian.

The UPMC Presbyterian Hospital Operating Room is nothing short of a marvel. As a Level 1 Trauma and Transplant Operating Room boasting 46 ORs and 10 specialty service lines, it’s an environment that truly never stops teaching. Students here get the chance to familiarize themselves with state-of-the-art operating rooms equipped with the latest technology. This exposure allows them to grasp cutting-edge surgical procedures and techniques firsthand.

The second post in this series will discuss the professional connections a student can make through Carlow University’s Perioperative Internship.
