Carlow University Launches Doctorate in Education Program:

EdD is Designed for Individuals Who Want to Transform Education

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University is introducing a Doctorate in Education (EdD) program that will begin in the fall of 2024.

“Carlow’s EdD is uniquely designed with a focus on Scholar-Practitioner Stewardship,” said Patricia L. McMahon, PhD, the EdD’s program director.  “This program is targeted toward thought leaders who want to challenge the status quo, embrace diversity of thinking and expression, and imagine transformative change in today’s systems of educational practice.”

Dr. McMahon explains that the term “Scholar-Practitioner” describes someone currently immersed in the educational system, but who want to research ways to change the system for the benefit of both the students and the teaching profession as a whole.  Carlow’s EdD will challenge students to study their practice in relation to the changing systems of education and advance their careers as classroom teachers, principals, school district superintendents, assistant superintendents, college faculty, executive directors, and heads of foundations.

A three-year, practice-based inquiry program, Carlow’s EdD offers four specialization strands aligned with the professional goals of students: Educational Leadership; Curriculum and Learning; Literacy, and Early Childhood Policy and Leadership. The program is online with offsite internships and an on-campus Dissertation Defense.

Students in the program will be immersed in a fully integrated, highly collaborative doctoral study design. The courses are sequenced to help learners:

  • reflect upon their personal and professional self-knowledge and their predispositions to scholarly practice;
  • interrogate the dilemmas of their practice;
  • frame a practice-based inquiry;
  • cultivate a mode of inquiry congruent with their innate way of knowing, and
  • research and represent their work.

“Our EdD program is designed for people who want to become part of a collaborative leadership community of ethical stewards of our profession,” explains Dr. McMahon. “One of the distinctions of Carlow’s program is that students will be encouraged to embrace the paradoxical elements inherent in the complex systems of education and to imagine and implement new systems and approaches that innovate for human-centered, transformational learning.”

The inaugural cohort of Carlow’s EdD program begins with the Fall 2024 semester. Admission requirements include a current curriculum vitae; a master’s transcript from an accredited institution, an essay and three professional recommendations.
