Dean encourages students to celebrate Juneteenth, provides COVID-19 protocol update

University Communication to Students

Dear Students,

Nationally, health officials are emphasizing COVID-19 vaccination as evidence of increasing contagious variants of the virus are confirmed in the United States. Within Pennsylvania and Allegheny County, we continue to see vaccination rates move closer to 70% of eligible adults 18 and older. On campus, we celebrated some exciting news: Carlow began welcoming new Fall 2021 students to orientation this week, bringing campus back to life!

Important reminder information for you includes:

New This Week:

Carlow University offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, to honor the Juneteenth National Freedom Day, as designated in 2019 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I strongly encourage all in our community to celebrate this vital day in our nation’s history.

Help Needed – Submit a Care Report

As announced by the President’s office on June 1, 2021, Carlow University strongly recommends that all students, faculty and staff be fully vaccinated. Carlow will not require the COVID-19 vaccine at this time, except as noted. Specifically, for student athletes and residential students, an FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine will be required to participate and/or live in the residence halls beginning August 2021. The full announcement can be found by clicking here.

Based on updated CDC, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Allegheny County Health Department guidelines, Carlow University COVID-19 prevention protocols will follow these general principles:

  • Those fully vaccinated will benefit from reduction of restrictions.
  • Those not fully vaccinated will still be expected to observe preventative measures consistent with the Commitment to the Common Good.
  • We will distinguish between on-campus outdoor and indoor activity.

Face Mask Requirements for Vaccinated Individuals

Those who are fully vaccinated (two weeks or more after receiving a final dose) are not required to wear masks when on campus or in campus buildings.

Face Mask Requirements for Unvaccinated Individuals

Those who are not fully vaccinated (two weeks or more after their final dose) are required to wear a mask while in campus buildings, classrooms, lounge spaces, stairwells, elevators, and University-owned vehicles.

On-Campus Outdoor Activities

No mask is required of either vaccinated or unvaccinated individuals when outdoors on Carlow’s campus.

Have a good rest of the week,

Timothy P. Phillips, PhD
Vice President of Student Affairs & Dean of Students
