Film Screening and Discussion with the Director Happens March 24 in Honor of Women’s History Month
Pittsburgh, Pa. – In honor of Women’s History Month, Carlow University will present a screening of the film American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs followed by a discussion with the director, Grace Lee, on Tuesday, March 24, beginning at 4 p.m. in room 107 of the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, located on the corner of Fifth and Craft avenues on the Carlow campus.
Both the screening and the discussion with the director are free and open to the public.
The film tells the story of Grace Lee Boggs, a 98-year-old Chinese American woman living in Detroit whose vision of revolution may surprise you. A writer, activist, and philosopher, Grace made her home in the African American movement, where she became a leading thinker alongside her late husband James “Jimmy” Boggs, a Detroit auto worker and fellow author/activist. Together, they helped make Detroit into an epicenter of African American organizing. Learn more and view a preview at www.gooddocs.net.
The director, Grace Lee, is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker of both fiction and documentary films. She produced and directed an episode of the PBS MAKERS series on Women and Politics, which aired in Fall 2014. Her recent feature film about the 2012 Presidential campaign, Janeane from Des Moines, premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Prior to that, she wrote and directed American Zombie, which premiered at Slamdance and SXSW before being released by Cinema Libre. She produced and directed The Grace Lee Project, a feature documentary on Asian American identity that aired on the Sundance Channel and is distributed by Women Make Movies.
The event is sponsored by Carlow University’s Women’s and Gender Studies, and English departments, and by the Madwomen in the Attic Creative Writing Workshop.
