Civil War Re-enactors, Photographs, and Displays Will Add to the Experience of the Play
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University Theatre will step back into the ‘60s – the 1860s – when it presents Our American Cousin, Tuesday, April 14 through Sunday, April 19, at the Rosemary Heyl Theatre in Antonian Hall on the Carlow campus.
Curtain is at 8 pm April 14 through 18, with 2 pm matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday. (Please note that there is only a matinee performance on Sunday.) The play is directed by Steve Fatla, director of Carlow University Theatre, and the performers are Carlow students, staff, faculty, and local community theatre veterans.
Theatre-goers are invited to immerse themselves in a moment that changed history, as they attend the popular comedy that President Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. The Carlow production of the play written by Tom Taylor opens on the 150th anniversary of that tragic moment in American history.
In addition to the play, attendees can enjoy for no extra charge the following events:
Each night beginning at 6:45 p.m. and at 12:30 p.m. for the matinee performances:
• Civil War re-enactors will have an encampment outside Antonian Hall.
• Photo Antiquities will have a display of Civil War photographs and carte de visites on the first floor of Antonian Hall.
• Clara Barton re-enactor will give a talk about The Missing Soldiers Office.
• The 9th Pennsylvania will have a table explaining the Chartiers Cemetery Civil War Headstone Restoration Project, for which proceeds from the play will help benefit.
• Visitors can read displays that explain the history and background of Our American Cousin, Ford’s Theatre, Fort Zug (which was the name of the Civil War encampment located on the land of what is now Carlow University), and the Sisters of Mercy contribution to nursing in the Civil War.
• General Grant and Abraham Lincoln impersonators will be in attendance at each performance.
• A pianist accompanies each performance of the play as it might have been done in 1865.
Additionally on the Friday-Sunday dates, there will be demonstrations of Civil War weapons, Photo Antiquities will have a presentation on the types of Civil War photography and Lincoln photography, and there will be a presentation on President Lincoln.
