Trained as an Attorney, D’Emilio Has Spent the Past 17 Years in Higher Education Administration

Pittsburgh, Pa. –
Carlow University President Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD, announced today that Deanne D’Emilio, JD, has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“I believe we have an outstanding Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs who will lead academic affairs to a new level and fulfill our vision as a thriving University,” said Mellon.

D’Emilio had been serving as Carlow’s Interim Provost since July 1, 2014. She assumed the interim position during a time of great transition and change for the University, as Carlow transitioned from six schools/divisions to three Colleges led by three new Deans, who began their service in July 2015.

“Deanne has demonstrated that she is academically and experientially well qualified for the role of provost,” said Lynn George, PhD, RN, CNE, the Dean of the College of Health and Wellness.  “She is visionary and well respected and her continued leadership is an important asset for Carlow University.”

Mellon stated that feedback from faculty was instrumental in the decision to make D’Emilio the permanent provost.

“Our faculty had identified key qualities and characteristics for the next academic leader at Carlow,” she said.  “Deanne has clearly demonstrated the characteristics of an outstanding leader, ranging from her excellent communication and listening skills, an analytical knowledge of trends in higher education, a curricular vision with the ability to bring people together, and a clear commitment to the mission and values of the university.”

Mellon added that D’Emilio’s fiscal acumen, accreditation experience, and ability to develop partnerships in the broader community were also factors in the decision to name her as provost.

“I am honored and thrilled to be named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Carlow University,” said D’Emilio.  “This is an exciting time of growth and momentum at the university and I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Mellon, the Board of Trustees, the President’s Cabinet, and our outstanding faculty and staff to advance the mission to offer a transformational education and achieve our vision of preparing career-ready ethical leaders who are committed to a just and merciful world.”

D’Emilio first joined Carlow University in July, 2013 as Dean of the School of Management before then assuming the Interim Provost Position one year later.  Prior to coming to Carlow, D’Emilio was an associate academic dean and professor of Legal Studies and chair of the division of Humanities, Social Science, and Professional Studies at Mt. Aloysius College.  In that role, she oversaw 12 different undergraduate programs, the Honors Program, the First Year and Capstone Experiences, and graduate programs in business administration, psychology, community counseling, and criminal justice.

D’Emilio received her B.A. in education with a religion minor and graduated Cum Laude from Westminster College in 1982.  Two years later, she earned an M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Bowling Green State University.  She earned her law degree with Honors from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1987. Upon graduation from law school, she practiced law until 1998.

D’Emilio is a resident of Plum Borough.
