Men’s and Women’s Teams Become 13th Teams in Eight Sports at the University

Carlow Has Added Six Athletics Teams in the Past Three Years

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University is proud to announce the addition of a track and field program, which will begin competition during the spring of 2018.

“We are truly excited about adding track and field.” said George Sliman, Director of Athletics at Carlow University. “Because of the variety of events involved, the sport is extremely popular and will be well received by current and prospective students.”

The program, featuring a men’s and a women’s team, will be coached by Greg Schmitt, the Carlow men’s and women’s cross country coach.

“What I’m looking forward to the most is the competitiveness. I’ve always been a competitor and I feel this is another step, not just for me, not just for the student-athletes, but also the school,” Schmitt said. “How well can we build a program in the first year? How competitive can we be?”

Schmitt has hired Christian Booker to coach throwers, and other assistant coaches will be named in the upcoming months.

Recruiting for the first class of track and field athletes is underway. Schmitt is seeking 15 men and 15 women for the inaugural teams, including sprinters, distance runners, jumpers and throwers.

“We can make a huge push if everybody comes out and does their part,” Schmitt said. “I think we can do some very big things in the River States Conference.”

Discussions with local schools about partnerships for facilities to host practices and meets are underway.
