Carlow University and the Neighborhood Learning Alliance have tripled the number of students served by the high school to college program.

Orientation for the Program Is Monday, May 22, from 6 – 7:30 PM
Pittsburgh, Pa. – For the second consecutive year, Carlow University and the Neighborhood Learning Alliance (NLA) will be hosting college-level classes for high school students from the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The program begins June 13 through August 3, 2017.
“Last year, Carlow offered a business management course for 22 students,” said Howard Stern, PhD, coordinator of the program who taught the business management course last year, and who is also the co-director of the MBA program at Carlow. “This year, there will be three classes offered to 66 students.”
The classes are taught by Carlow faculty. The titles of the three courses and the Carlow faculty who will lead them are:
• Adolescent Psychology, taught by Stephanie Wilsey, PhD, associate professor and co-chair of undergraduate psychology at Carlow.
• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving with Technology, taught by Rachel Afolabi, PhD, the dean of online and digital learning at Carlow.
• Wellness Across the Adult Lifespan, taught by Lisa Spagnolo, MSN, BSN, RN, a member of the nursing faculty in the College of Health and Wellness at Carlow.
The 66 accepted students, who range in age from 16 to 18, will be representing Taylor Allderdice, Brashear, CAPA, Obama, Pittsburgh Science and Technology and University Prep.
“These students will be challenged and evaluated, as in any rigorous college-level class,” said Stern. “Of the 22 students enrolled in last year’s class, all 22 passed the course with a grade of “C” or better, which earned them three college credits and a $2,000 renewable scholarship to Carlow, if they enroll.”
Stern notes that because of last year’s success, Carlow, the NLA and its financial supporters decided to triple the program for 2017.
On Monday, May 22, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., an accepted student/parent orientation will be held in the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, located on the corner of Fifth and Craft avenues on the Carlow campus. The students and parents will meet the faculty and academic support staff who will describe the program and answer any questions.
