Concert Will Take Place on Friday, November 3, at Carnegie Music Hall, Oakland
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Marianne Cornetti, an internationally recognized mezzo soprano and western Pennsylvania native, will be featured at the Carlow University Women of Spirit® Scholarship Benefit Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.
Cornetti, who was honored as a Carlow University Woman of Spirit® in 2016, has performed and sung all over the world as one of the leading Verdi mezzo-sopranos of her generation. [A more complete biography is at the end of this release.]
This evening will leave you profoundly moved by the power of Cornetti’s voice and theater. It also presents a wonderful opportunity to further support Carlow’s historic Mercy mission to serve those less fortunate.
All proceeds from the event will support scholarships for Carlow students who are experiencing serious financial need. At Carlow, scholarship support helps 94 percent of students who receive some form of financial aid, while 49 percent receive federal grants and depend on additional scholarship dollars in order to earn their college degrees.

Pittsburgh native Marianne Cornetti is recognized internationally as one of the leading Verdi mezzo- sopranos of her generation. She has appeared as Amneris in Aida, Azucena in Il Trovatore, and Eboli in Don Carlos at such theaters as the Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Theatre Royale de la Monnaie, Brussels, Teatro Comunale in Florence, the Arena di Verona, Gran Teatro del Liceo, Barcelona, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and many others.
Recent engagements included Lady Macbeth in Macbeth and Laura in La Gioconda with Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Azucena in Il Trovatore at the National Theatre of China in Beijing and the Teatro Muncipal in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Cornetti also returned to the Teatro Regio for Verdi concerts and appeared with the company as Ulrica on its tour to Japan. She returned to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Un Ballo in Maschera, performed as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel at the Minnesota Opera, sang in Aida at the Auditorio de Tenerife, and will return as Azucena in Il Trovatore at the National Theatre of China. Future performances include a return to the Teatro Municipal as Ortrud in Lohengrin, and a return to the Minnesota Opera as Ježibaba in Rusalka, amongst others.
Marianne Cornetti appears frequently in concert in works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Elgar’s Sea Pictures, and De Falla’s El Amor Brujo. She has recorded Cilea’s L’Arlesiana and Puccini’s Edgar opposite Placido Domingo.
Marianne grew up in Cabot, Pennsylvania, and was a recipient of the 2016 Carlow University Woman of Spirit® award.
