Sixth through Eighth Graders Wish to Express Their Support for Parkland Students
Pittsburgh, Pa. – In response to the tragic shootings at Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., sixth through eighth grade students at The Campus School of Carlow University will participate in a walkout on Wednesday, March 14, beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m. and lasting until 10:17 a.m., symbolic of the 17 lives lost in Parkland.
This walkout, nationally organized by young people working with Women’s March Youth Empower, originated with an idea from Campus School students and faculty, and is supported by the administration of the Campus School. Students will walk out of Tiernan Hall, located at the center of Carlow University’s campus, and will march, carrying anti-violence protest signs reflective of the Mercy values, to the St. Agnes Center of Carlow University, located on Fifth Avenue, near the intersection of Fifth and Robinson Street. They will then return to the school where they will have a brief prayer service.
While originating with an idea from the students, this activity is not mandatory. Students in lower grades and those that elect not to participate in the walkout will participate in an alternative activity that focuses on “compassionate communities” during the time of the march.
“It is important in times like this to be aware of the concerns of our children, and to meet children where they are emotionally and intellectually,” said Tawana Cook Purnell, the executive director of the Campus School. “Most of all, they need to know they are in a safe space with caring adults.”
