Pittsburgh, Pa. – Matthew E. Gordley, PhD, dean of the College of Learning and Innovation at Carlow University, will give a reading from his new book, New Testament Christological Hymns: Exploring Tests, Contexts, and Significance, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, in The Gailliot Center, located on the fifth floor of University Commons on the Carlow campus.
Gordley has been researching and writing about early Christian and Jewish psalms and hymns for nearly two decades. He specializes in reading these early religious and poetic texts with careful attention to their historical, cultural, and literary contexts.
With his latest book, Gordley examines the earliest Christian hymns preserved in the New Testament, and – seen through the social context of the time – shows that the hymns can be viewed as not just “religious, but actually painted an alternative vision of reality that was in sharp contrast to Roman claims of power. Viewed through this lens, Gordley believes they can provide insight into the development of early worship traditions.
