“Confronting Hate – A Discussion of the Tree of Life Synagogue Tragedy” at 12:30 PM
Pittsburgh, Pa. –Hate crimes, hate speech and how the average person can respond will be the topic of discussion for the presentation, “Confronting Hate – A Discussion of the Tree of Life Synagogue Tragedy,” at 12:30 p.m., on Tuesday, December 4, at Carlow University.
The program, which is jointly sponsored by The Atkins Center for Ethics and The Social Justice Institutes, will take place in the Gailliot Center, located on the fifth floor of University Commons on the Carlow campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Presenters and their topics include:
Mark Weir, Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion, will engage the community in a courageous conversation about oppression and prejudice that still continues to permeate our region and society. The dialogue will encompass how we can continue to raise awareness and consciousness around these elements and what our response should be when events rooted in hate happen and affect our world.
Bill Schweers, JD, Executive Director of The Atkins Center for Ethics, will examine the far-right’s use of social media for calls to action – including acts of violence, hatred, and bigotry – in the context of the Tree of Life massacre.
Sheila Roth, PhD, Professor, Social Work, will speak on the effects of trauma caused by hate on victims, their loved ones, and first responders, who are often forgotten in the aftermath of tragedies involving multiple deaths. Dr. Roth is certified as an EMT, and can speak about the trauma experienced by those professionals responding to a tragedy.
The program will be followed by an audience discussion.
