Carlow University has named E. Jeanne Gleason, a Carlow alumna from the class of 1960, a Carlow Laureate, and former chair of the Board of Trustees, a Trustee Emerita.

Johnstown Native Graduated from Carlow in 1960 and Served as Trustee from 2011-2020
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University has named E. Jeanne Gleason, a Johnstown native and a 1960 graduate of the university, as a Trustee Emerita, a status granted to a former board member who has shown significant dedication to the university.
“Carlow University and the board have benefited greatly from Jeanne’s leadership, her strong engagement in the community and the arts, as well as her knowledge and experience in government relations,” said Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD, president of Carlow University. “She has long demonstrated her deep affection for Carlow through generous contributions of her time, leadership, and commitment to our mission. She is a wonderful role model for our students of the Mercy mission personified”.
Gleason has served on the Carlow University board since 2011, completing 3 full terms, and was Chair of the Board from 2016-2018. During her tenure, she served on numerous committees, chairing both the Executive Committee and the Academic & Student Affairs Committee, as well as being a member of the Financial Oversight and Trusteeship Committees.
In addition to her service to her alma mater, she has been an active member of the Johnstown community. Among her early endeavors was management of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra from 1983–1986 and 1988–1989. In 1989, Gleason became the founding director of the PA Rural Arts Alliance (PRAA), whose mission was to identify and provide service to local artists and art groups in a 22-county area through workshops, counseling, and technical assistance. She has also served on the boards of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Bottle Works, and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. She also served as the first president of the Conemaugh Health Foundation, and as a board member of Birthright of Johnstown.
In Pittsburgh, Gleason has served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT) as chair of the Board of Trustees (2004–2006), and as a director of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Carnegie Music and Performing Arts Board, the WPSX-TV Community Advisory Board, and the WQED Community Advisory Board. She has served on the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Board and UPMC’s board. She also has served as a member of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA).
Gleason has been the recipient of numerous awards, some of which include the Athena Award (1998), the YWCA Tribute to Women Award (1989), the WQED/CING “VITA” Award (1991), the SAMA Service to the Arts Award (1989), and the Carlow University Service Award, as well as being a Carlow Laureate, the most prestigious award Carlow University presents to alumni.
