Softball knocks off No. 2 seed NHTI to stay alive in SCWS action

DUBOIS, Pa. --- Carlow University softball racked up 11 hits in a 5-0 upset victory over No. 2 seed New Hampshire Technical Institute Tuesday in a USCAA Small College World Series elimination game.

The Celtics (20-21) put up two unearned runs in the top of the first inning against the Lynx (23-7).

Freshman Ciara Murray (Windsor, Ontario) led off by reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Adrianna Gottheld (SO/Charleroi, Pa.) put runners on first and second with a bunt single, and Annamarie Osiecki (SO/Erie, Pa.) hit a two-out single up the middle to bring them both home.

NHTI would not allow the Celtics another run until the top of the seventh.

Abby Stroud (New Egypt, N.J.) helped her cause with a lead-off triple to start the inning, and sophomore Tristan Voss (Enon Valley, Pa.) hit a single to bring her in and extend the Carlow lead to 3-0.

Senior Sophia Papageorge (Beaver Falls, Pa.) singled to put runners on first and second with one out.

Danielle Levato (SR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) hit a two-out single down the left field line to score two runs and put Carlow ahead, 5-0.

Stroud, Papageorge and Levato each went 2 for 4 at the plate.

Stroud earned the complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

The Celtics face No. 5 seed St. Mary of the Woods College for a 12 p.m. elimination game on Wednesday, May 15.
