Why did some seven million people leave Ireland for North America from the 17th through the 20th centuries? What did this migration mean for the country they left and more especially, the country that received them? How did the United States transform the immigrant Irish and their children, and how did the Irish transform the United States? This course will seek to understand the dynamic, ongoing impact of this mass migration on the economic, political, and cultural development of the United States, where 45 million people today claim some ancestral connection to Ireland. 3 credits FULFILLS HISTORY LAI REQUIREMENT.
