Carlow University added softball as an intercollegiate sport in 1997. The Celtics won the American Mideast Conference championship in 2012, the final season of the conference's existence. In 2016, the Celtics finished with a 30-14 record, placed third in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC), and qualified for the USCAA National Championship Tournament. The team advanced to the USCAA National Championship game for the first time in Carlow athletics history, finishing the season as the national runner-up.
The Celtics now compete in the River States Conference (RSC), as well as the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
The Celtics condition year-round and play "Fall Ball" before official spring training begins in March, when they travel to Florida or South Carolina. They compete in at least 35 contests per season. Carlow home games are played at Fairhaven Park, in Kennedy Township.
