Since its founding in 1929, Carlow University has given students the knowledge, insight, tools, and experience to become leaders for the common good. Carlow is a university with more than 2,300 students (1,400 undergraduate and 900 graduate) and 500 faculty & staff.
Carlow University—formerly Mount Mercy College—was founded by the Sisters of Mercy to fulfill the city’s need in providing a baccalaureate education to Catholic women. Today, Carlow engages its diverse academic community in a process of life-long learning, scholarship, and research. The University is dedicated to providing students with a learner-centered education, focusing on the individual.

Best Bang for the Buck by Washington MonthlyWashington Monthly Magazine Ranks Carlow University Among Its Top 100 Best Bang for the Buck CollegesFor the second consecutive year, Carlow University cracked the Top 20 private colleges and Top 100 overall on Washington Monthly’s annual ranking of more than 1,500 colleges that provide the “best bang for the buck.” Each year, the publication crafts a list of the colleges in America “that do the best job of helping non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.” Carlow was ranked 95th overall (public, private, for-profit) and 17th among just the private schools. Notably, Carlow was one of only two schools from Pennsylvania—and the only regional institution—among the top 100, and one of only two Catholic schools among the top 20 private schools.
Top 100 University for Employment Outcomes by Educate To Career (ETC) Carlow University Ranked Among Top 6% Nationally for Employment OutcomesA recent survey of more than 1,200 colleges ranks Carlow University 69th in the nation in terms of helping its students improve their earnings and attain quality employment after graduation. Carlow is one of seven schools in Pennsylvania, and the only regional institution, listed in the top 100. Educate To Career (ETC) compiled their College Rankings Index by analyzing which universities did the best job of helping their students to improve their earnings and attain quality employment after graduation.
National Service Honor Roll
For the past ten years, Carlow University has been nationally recognized for its commitment to service. The University was again listed on the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes colleges and universities that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. The Honor Roll is a part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is devoted to helping college students serve others while strengthening their academic and civic skills.
2015 Military Friendly® School
Carlow University has been designated a 2015 Military Friendly® School. The Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and those that dedicate resources that ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
