Pittsburgh, Pa. - For the eighth-straight year, Carlow University students, faculty, and staff are being recognized for their efforts within the community by being named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
"We congratulate the awardees and the students for their dedication to service," said Wendy Spencer, CEO of Corporation for National Community Service. "These institutions have inspired students and faculty alike to roll up their sleeves and work alongside members of the community to solve problems and improve their neighbors lives."
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll launched in 2006. Since its beginnings, it has recognized colleges and universities that are participating in worthwhile service in their communities. Carlow has been selected to the Honor Roll every year since the 2006 inception of the program.
"Communities are strengthened when we all come together, and we are encouraged that these institutions and their students have made service a priority," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "Civic engagement should be a key component of every student's education experience. Through reaching out to meet the needs of their neighbors, these students are deepening their impact, strengthening our democracy and ultimately preparing themselves to be successful citizens."
Carlow students help out locally with the Youth Media Advocacy program and the annual Student Government Association Fashion Show which benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters. Students help out locally, nationally, and globally with Alternative Spring Break service opportunities.
"We are proud that Carlow has received the Honor Roll for many years," said Jessica Friedrichs, Carlow's coordinator of service learning. "This is a testament to the commitment of faculty, staff and students in living out the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, our founders. The Mercy mission is one that sees service in the pursuit of social justice as an essential component to liberal arts education."
