Life = Credits Toward A Degree

Michelle earned college credit for knowledge she already had prior to enrollment.

Michelle Johnson, a senior business management major, realized the power of education years ago after one class in Excel software inspired her to completely revamp her employer's business processes. She then earned an associate's degree from community college while working jobs in business and accounting. In 2013 she felt the time was right to go back to school.

"Attaining my bachelor's degree is a personal goal. I truly believe there are things you learn on the job that you can't get in the classroom and vice versa. It's important to do both," says Michelle.

Carlow was a perfect fit for her goals—and flexible to pair with a full-time job. Plus, Carlow gave her credit for community college courses and prior life experiences, altogether more than 40 credits that saved her time and money.

She admits being intimidated at first by the process to apply for Prior Learning Credit Assessment.

"Carlow helped me every step of the way. They broke it down for me and made it easy. I walked away feeling validated, like my jobs had truly made a difference in my life. The process was mind-blowing and enlightening," she says.

After less than four years as a part-time student at Carlow, Michelle will earn a bachelor's degree in business management. She applies what she has learned to her day job as a business manager for the University of Pittsburgh's Academic Resource Center and also as co-owner of a design and decorating firm called H.o.T. Designs.

Michelle has even bigger goals in mind.

"Next, I plan to pursue a master's in theology. I'm gradually getting there! There's a calling on my life, and I'm at a point where I need to follow," she says.
