Davenport defeats Celtics in women’s soccer opener

PITTSBURGH – The Carlow University women’s soccer team opened its 2016 season against Davenport University on Wednesday, August 24.

The Panthers (1-0/0-0), the 2012 and 2013 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference champions, took a 4-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a 5-0 victory, at Highmark Stadium.

Shameeka Fishley (SR/Leeds, England) gave Davenport the early lead with a goal on a corner kick by Juli Knapp (SO/Akron, OH) in the eighth minute. Just two minutes later, Cassandra Bosworth (FR/Walker, MI) added a goal.

The Panthers netted another pair in the final five minutes of the first half, when Sabrina Stone (FR/St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) and Halie Farrell (FR/Holland/MI) each scored.

Katherine Steiner (SO/Ada,MI) scored the final goal.

The Celtics (0-1/0-0) host the University of Maine at Fort Kent in their first USCAA contest of the season Friday, Sept. 2, at 7pm.
