Senior Accountant

Description:

Carlow University invites applications for the position of Senior Accountant.  This position has primary oversight for the accurate and timely maintenance of all the University's accounting records.  The individual will assist the Controller in providing financial analysis to management and will be a key point of contact during the annual audit.  The position will require in-depth knowledge of accounting principles to review, analyze, summarize and report financial information.  Reports on and records accounting transactions in compliance with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the University's policies and procedures. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform month-end duties, as assigned, including the preparation of journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist the Controller in preparing the monthly financial reporting package and corresponding analytical support
  • Act as a resource in providing financial statement support and documentation to the auditors
  • Assist in the fiscal management of awards, which includes working with Advancement and Office of Sponsored Research in the review of new grants, managing post-award expenses in accordance with the Omni Circular and communicating with related parties throughout the course of the grant.
  • Execute drawdowns of federal, state Pell and other student aid dollars.  
  • Coordinate with accounts payable to issue vendor checks
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc special reports, providing information to various regulatory agencies, donors and other stakeholders
  • Compile and organize data for use in preparation of the University's annual form 990 tax return.
  • Assist in the development of accounting policies and procedures surrounding the implementation of new processes.
  • Provide support in cross-functional projects and assist other departments with financial reporting and disclosure matters.
  • Participate in department cross-training and ensure thorough documentation of own processes are properly prepared
  • Acts as the backup to the Cash Accountant and AP function as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field required, public accounting experience, CPA license and/or CNAP certification preferred.  Five or more years of professional accounting experience is required.  Non-profit or higher education experience is preferred.  Prior experience with the preparation of work papers, interpretation of information and utilization of an automated accounting system is necessary. 

Knowledge:

  • A firm foundation in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and FASB Statements as they relate to private non-profit industry are necessary.
