IR Data Analyst

Description:

Carlow University invites applications for the position of IR Data Analyst. This position will support the work of the Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Planning department as well as the University as a whole by performing data extractions, data transformations, data reporting, data analysis, maintenance of data and records, and other duties as needed.

The IR Data Analyst performs a portion of the day-to-day work of the department, including extracting data from Carlow's student information system and other systems, manipulating and storing the data, creating reports, performing analyses, maintaining files and records; responding to internal and external requests for data.

Responsibilities 

  • Extracts data from Carlow's student information system, IPEDS Data Center and other remote data sources, MS Access, MS SQL Server, SAP Business Objects, and other systems by creating new reports/queries and/or modifying and running existing reports/queries
  • Cleanses, formats, transforms, loads, and analyzes large data sets; ensures that all necessary data are extracted, transformed, and loaded according to schedule;  creates and maintains data and file organization systems
  • Produces accurate and user-friendly reports, charts, and graphs that conform to departmental and institutional guidelines and standards as well as best practices
  • Creates and follows processes to ensure the highest possible level of accuracy in the work of the department
  • Ensures the confidentiality of data
  • With guidance from the Assistant Vice President, prepares and submits institutional response to external surveys, annual reports, required state and federal reports; responds to internal and external requests for University data, including ad hoc requests
  • Develops and maintains databases for longitudinal comparisons and analyses
  • Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President, conducts comprehensive studies on targeted topics including but not limited to recruitment, remediation, retention, and completion as requested by administration; applies intermediate statistical principles as appropriate
  • Learns and uses new technologies, techniques, software, data types, tools, etc. as needed
  • May provide training to members of the campus community in topics related to the work of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Planning
  • May serve on University committees

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, in Computer Science, Information Science, or field in which strong data analysis skills are acquired; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Experience extracting, transforming, loading, and analyzing large data sets, using primarily Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Access, MS SQL Server; ability to create and modify macros in VB and/or another language
  • Experience writing reports to present the results of data analysis
  • Excellent proficiency utilizing computer applications, particularly MS Excel 2010 or higher, MS Access 2010 or higher, and MS Word; strong functional knowledge of computer applications for data acquisition and analysis is required; ability to write SQL data queries is essential; experience with Crystal Reports or similar software is essential
  • Experience with SAP BusinessObjects, WebIntelligence, and Universe Designer a strong plus;
  • SPSS experience a strong plus;
  • Understanding of the concepts of data warehouses and data cubes a strong plus
  • Knowledge of the types of data analyzed in institutions of higher education a very strong plus 
  • Knowledge of and experience applying intermediate statistical principles
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to adhere to schedules and deliver work on time is necessary
  • Ability to work independently but also to take detailed instruction from supervisor and other administrators
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of the Datatel Colleague system is a plus
  • Good writing and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to present data in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
